Indian National Anthem

I first heard the Indian National Anthem on Republic Day, January 26, 2011, here at Nava Nalanda Mahavihara. The second time was when the Governor of Bihar came to the inaugural ceremony for the NNM workshop on the Heritage of Nalanda.

When Deepak posted a “silent” version of the Indian National Anthem of FB http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kk02qPlnS2E, I thought the sign language was just beautiful. That prompted me to look up the words (from Know India at india.gov.in) by the late poet Rabindra Nath Tagore.

Jana-gana-mana-adhinayaka, jaya he
Bharata-bhagya-vidhata.
Punjab-Sindh-Gujarat-Maratha
Dravida-Utkala-Banga
Vindhya-Himachala-Yamuna-Ganga
Uchchala-Jaladhi-taranga.
Tava shubha name jage,
Tava shubha asisa mage,
Gahe tava jaya gatha,
Jana-gana-mangala-dayaka jaya he
Bharata-bhagya-vidhata.
Jaya he, jaya he, jaya he,
Jaya jaya jaya, jaya he!

English Interpretation:

Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people,
Dispenser of India’s destiny.
Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sind, Gujarat, Maratha,
Of the Dravida and Orissa and Bengal;
It echoes in the hills of the Vindhyas and Himalayas,
Mingles in the music of Jamuna and Ganges and is
chanted by the waves of the Indian Sea.
They pray for thy blessings and sing thy praise.
The saving of all people waits in thy hand,
Thou dispenser of India’s destiny.
Victory, victory, victory to thee.

A Bollywood movie I have been watching to learn Hindi has a scene of a young boy and his class singing this national anthem. This gave me the opportunity to sing along and try to learn the words and music!

When I spoke to a Mahavihara student on Wednesday, I mentioned to him that I was learning the Indian National Anthem and I sang the first few lines for him. He thought that was wonderful and then said that if he were vice-chancellor of the university, he’d call me up on stage to sing the national anthem and prove that even an American can learn the national anthem. I laughed at this comment and said I’d have to keep practicing it until I had it all memorized!!! Good thing I have lots and lots of time (years and years) to practice before he becomes vice-chancellor ! :-)
