Budhiya Kabaddi--Setting the Stage

Budhiya Kabaddi-- Setting the Stage (Day 1)

Today, 17 February 2011, started the four-day Jarasandha Trophy, Budhiya Kabaddi tournament. I arrived a little before the start time at 3 pm and watched the process of setting up! First, the field was combed by Deepak-ji, Paanda-ji and others to remove large stones or anything with a sharp or rough edge. The field was chalked and the team signs were hung, as well as, a sponsor sign. Next, the Budhiya Kabaddi banner was stretched and glued to a huge metal frame. Once installed, bamboo scaffolding around the banner held the white background and red curtain. A black sofa and chairs were brought out for the honored guests, in addition to, a carpet and glass table for the trophies. Finally, the chairs were set up just in time for the arrival of players and spectators.

Budhiya Kabaddi --Behind the scenes – Day 3

When I arrived on the third day to the Nava Nalanda Sanskritik Gram building and field for the Budhiya Kabaddi tournament, I found many of the players gathered around a desk where Deepak-ji sat filling out certificates. Everyone wanted to make sure their name was on the team roster and that it was spelled correctly! With Paanda-ji helping sort the certificates by teams, Deepak carefully wrote each player’s name.

Little did this man-of- many- hats realize that he’d also be patiently explaining the rules of the game to the players as disagreements around scoring or plays arouse. The players looked up to him and listened with respect!
